Member Story: Joanna from Nebraska

Meet Joanna, one of our UpChoose moms from Omaha, Nebraska. She's the mom of Luca who is now 8 months old. She joined UpChoose just before Luca was born. You can find her on Instagram @joanna_organize

My name is Joanna Wirick.

Live in? Grew up in?

I was born in Seoul, South Korea and adopted at 4-months. I've been in Omaha, Nebraska ever since.

Luca Andrew Wirick, the sweetest, happiest little boy! We're blessed to be part of #theluckyfew.

Being intentional with my purchases and what enters our home is extremely important to me, and something my parents modeled growing up. As a professional organizer, I see how things can dominate people's lives and create chaos and overwhelm, and I encourage people to focus on experiences rather than things.

One tactic I share with my clients who are new on their organizing journey is to avoid impulse buys. Whether it's a single-use gadget or super discounted shirt, we usually don't need these items, nor do we actually want them––we just think we do in the moment.
 

What are some benefits you have seen over time, are there things that worked well for you?

When you start to notice your consumption habits, your relationship with "things" begins to shift. Rather than focusing on wanting or needing something new, you become more content with what you have. I think most of us would rather have a home filled with a few intentional items that we love and reflect our values rather than dozens of items that were impulse buys.

Any tips you'd like to share with other expecting parents who just heard about these issues and trying to figure out their first steps?

 I have several posts over on my blog that are great for expecting parents like this one.

Can you tell us a bit about the set(s) you received from UpChoose? What did you pick and how have you used the platform so far? 

I subscribe to the Mini, Preloved set and LOVE it! I only wanted clothing for my little one, so the Mini set was perfect. I also like buying used clothing, but going to resale stores completely overwhelms me. I love that UpChoose partners with brands that use organic cotton and focus on sustainability. My little guy grows like a weed, so I request my sets a few weeks early, and I love that I have the flexibility to do so.

Do you already have a favorite outfit or item from your UpChoose set?

 What’s most exciting to you about being part of the UpChoose community and what are the most important things we can help you achieve?

Clothing sizes for babies can be extremely frustrating. A 3-month size in one brand fits more like a NB in another. I love that I've been able to try different brands through UpChoose, so I know what fits him best. I also provide feedback on each set, and I can tell they listen before my next set is shipped. I'm so grateful that UpChoose exists and is the perfect solution for my purchasing ethos!
